Director Boot Camp - So You're a Director!
    Congratulations-Sort of.

Presenters: Bill Harrington & Paul Feuer

With great power comes great responsibility, and your decisions will shape the future of your board or association. And your decisions as a director, and the actions of your board or association, involve a host of legal issues that may result in liability. Your association can get sued as a result of your conduct. But even more frightening, so can you!

Virtually every process, no matter how small and insignificant, carries with it responsibilities and, if done improperly, consequences. As soon as you sit down at the director table, you have all the same duties, responsibilities and liabilities as a director of Microsoft - without the pay.

You need to protect your association and yourself by understanding some of the basic duties and obligations of directors such as: the powers of a board of directors, the importance of your fiduciary duties, the joys of competition compliance, and the need to pay attention to how you make decisions. Join the lawyers from CREA’s legal department as they take you on a thoroughly entertaining (yet depressingly thorough) tour of some of the main areas of legal concern for directors.
    12:00 - 1:30 pm

    Lunch with CREA Update

The update will provide delegates with serious information about how CREA is confronting new challenges in technology, reputation and government relations will be shared.

This update will be provided by Michael Bourque, CREA CEO; Randall McCauley, CREA Executive Vice President Reputation, Linda Kristal, Interim VP Advocacy; Patrick Pichette, VP REALTOR.ca

Winning in the Age of Disruptors
    Presenter: Rick Haase

There are many new offerings being made by innovative internet providers to Agents and Brokerages across Canada. We want to provide you with some insights as to how some of the Internet based changes in Real estate Marketing, Internet listings aggregators and Internet Leads providers are impacting the Real Estate brokerage and consumer landscape.

Winning in the Age of Disruption will shed light on how some of these providers have impacted the U.S. markets and what it portends for Canadian Brokers, Agents and Boards/MLS systems as well. We will see examples about how Digital Listings Aggregators (Zillow, Trulia, etc…) are building consumer facing experiences on-line and how these will compete for public and Agent attention and the revenue associated. In our efforts to be of service to our customers and in as much as these companies are in the process of selling their services in our service areas we need to understand more about how they work and their impact.

How Ethics and Reputation Drive Business
Presenter: Dan Tisch, President & CEO, Argyle Communications

Reputation, trust and ethics are more important than for REALTORS® in building relationships with Canadians. In a world where we all have global publishing power in our pockets, every mistake, real or imagined, true or false, can be instantly magnified like never before. For businesspeople, reputation can mean the difference between profit and loss, or success and failure.

Daniel Tisch, CEO of Argyle Public Relationships, has worked with leaders at the most senior levels of government and business. An expert on reputation, Dan was involved in a 2018 study by the Reputation Institute that revealed the most significant drop in the reputation of business since the global financial crisis. The data – and Dan’s presentation – show that Canadians increasingly want to work with someone they can trust, who puts people above profit, and is, above all, highly ethical.

For REALTORS® this is both a challenge and an opportunity. With careers built on relationships with clients and communities, they instinctively understand the value of reputation, and how improving it can lead to stronger business results.

This session will explore the link between ethics, reputation and career success. It will offer practical insight into how REALTORS® can understand and manage reputation risk, and use social media, branding, and community leadership to build trust, enhance their reputations and expand their businesses.

  • Evolving market segmentation. How brokerages are developing and changing to serve the evolving demands of both consumers and front-line practitioners.

  • The digital brokerage. How new technologies will help and challenge today’s REALTOR®.

  • What is driving Canadian real estate demand and why I remain optimistic for our industry despite widespread talk of recession and disruption.
  • 4:30 pm

No wonder Bill refers to CREA’s in-house counsel as the “Swiss Army knife of lawyers.” Celebrating his 20th year at CREA, Bill has seen it all and enjoys the variety and unpredictability of legal issues that come up. What would you do if, out of the blue, your life turned upside down? What if you went from being a happy, healthy, normal child and suddenly became an anxious, depressed, twitchy mess of devastating proportion? This is exactly what happened to Stuart Ellis-Myers. At the age of eight, Stuart began to develop one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses of our time . . .

Tourette’s Syndrome. Faced with the prospect of a lifetime of frustration, isolation, and shame – the typical reaction to this condition – Stuart instead chose to make his life into something remarkable. One of the most gifted and inspiring public speakers, Stuart has used the life lessons learned through years of battling this often emotionally crippling disorder to help countless others overcome their own challenges and fears. His insight and humanity have enabled him to share his own, often painful, experiences in such a way as to offer a real, usable, methodology for overcoming the many pitfalls of modern life. The countless physical and psychological manifestations of the high stress lives we all lead are made clearer to understand and easier to bear through his simple and effective system of positive change. It has worked for him. It can work for you. Told with total candor and charming wit, this is a story of inspiration and achievement with which virtually anyone can identify with. It takes you from a damaged, dysfunctional childhood in Britain, to a forced fantasy of a life in Vancouver; from the brutal bullying of his youth, to the betrayal and abandonment on the part of his first wife; from the day he finally learned that his “problem” had a name, to the night he stood on his balcony inches from stepping off into the seductive oblivion of suicide; Stuart holds nothing back. This is the story of a man who refused to accept other people’s “truths”. It is the story of a man who chose to, not only survive but become UNSTOPPABLE. So, if Stuart can overcome the ravages of Tourette’s Syndrome, and all of the disabling mental conditions that so often accompany it, and become remarkably successful in both his keynote speaker career and his personal life . . . what is holding any of us back from achieving our dreams?

    KENDAL NETMAKER

    Netmaker.jpg

Kendal Netmaker is one of Canada’s leading entrepreneurs and speakers, from Sweetgrass First Nation, SK. He grew up in poverty, raised by a hard-working single mother who cared for Kendal and his three siblings against the backdrop of a bleak economic landscape and few chances for improvement. But his life changed unexpectedly in fifth grade, when he befriended a young boy from South Africa, whose family provided the necessary funding for Kendal to take part in soccer. This opened up a whole other world for him that he would have never otherwise experienced. Two years later, when the family was relocating, they gave Kendal’s family their car; it was a life-changing gift that helped his mother access all kinds of basic necessities that had previously been difficult – and meant that Kendal and his sisters could now take part in after school sports. The incredible generosity of his childhood friend’s family inspired Kendal to give back when he launched his company, Neechie Gear – a lifestyle apparel brand that empowers youth through sports. A percentage of all Neechie Gear profits go toward funding sports programs for underprivileged youth.

While finishing two degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, Kendal worked on growing the brand, which was initially based out of Kendal’s small, one-bedroom apartment. After graduation, Kendal opened several pop-up stores and then eventually, an official headquarters for the company, in Saskatoon, SK. The brand is now sold to consumers across North America through exclusive retail partners and online. To date, Kendal has founded and invested in 5 businesses, the author of "Driven To Succeed" and won over 25 business awards, including runner-up at the YBI Global Entrepreneur of the Year.

    THE ADVOCATE AGENT

As Realtors, we're masters at self-promotion, but if we're honest sometimes this 'tooting our own horns' can bring a degree of discomfort to each of us. We still need to build our platforms, but using that influence to celebrate others has become a centrepiece of the David Smith Homes Group brand. David will share stories and insight into becoming an 'advocate agent', turning attention away from himself and toward local non-profits and businesses, creating win-win scenarios. David is keenly aware of the irony of giving a keynote talk on deflecting attention, so this presentation will include video content celebrating other Realtors to provide a fuller picture. Come prepared to ask yourself what you're passionate about, and how you can become an 'advocate' in that realm.

    DAVID SMITH

    David_Smith.jpg

David Smith leads the David Smith Homes Group out of Royal LePage Wolstencroft in Langley, BC, serving the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. David's business is built on a 'people over property, always.' approach, and has attempted to integrate the concept of 'advocate agency' into all they do. This means instead of talking about himself all the time, he tries to find local businesses and non-profits to celebrate, utilizing video content and social media with this end in mind. Ironically, he gets asked to talk about this approach regularly, trust him, he's aware of the irony. Highlights of David's advocacy have included 'Realtor Monopoly', a fundraiser for a local refugee settlement charity, and helping grow community-focused local businesses like Trading Post Brewing and Black Tiger Coffee. David has received a number of awards, including an Inman Innovator Award and a Real Estate Video Influencer Award, along with others for production, service, and professionalism. David has been married to Amanda for over a decade, and loves time with three young children.

Going After The Thing You Want in Life

Collaboration is the New Competition - The creativity of the “craft beer industry” spans way beyond the hoppy sensations, citrusy aromas, and witty branding. It’s time for the rest of the world to see how Alberta Craft Beer is leading the way with Entrepreneurial “COLLABORATION INNOVATION!!” Tool Shed brewing company has been disrupting this industry in many ways in the few short years they’ve been around. Their stories of how they continue to do it will inspire ANYONE who attends to do the same!

    GRAHAM SHERMAN

    Graham_Sherman-HiRes-June2016-1.jpg

Graham Sherman and his business partner, Jeff Orr, are two “high level geeks” who met in Afghanistan in 2007. At that time they were working on contracts for the Canadian and US government and military, installing encrypted, tactical communication networks.

By day, they rolled around the war zone in armoured vehicles, geeking out in the world of satellite communications. By night, they aimed their obsessive, high level geekery at mastering coffee, competitive BBQ, controlling their respective homes back in Calgary with their iPhones….and finally, with mastering the craft of brewing artisan beer.

Now, only four years after the very first batched brewed in Graham’s backyard, Tool Shed Brewing Company has a new 15,000 square foot home in Calgary with beers being sold in over 1000 locations across Western Canada, and has been nominated as Canadian Entrepreneur of the year. The team were also named as co-winners of the “40 Under 40” recognition from Avenue magazine.
