    NATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

    National Leadership Program
    The National Leadership Program (NLP) is designed to build stronger leaders by ensuring they have sound industry knowledge and an understanding of Association governance, and are equipped with the right leadership knowledge and tools to lead!

    The NLP consists of three courses, L100, L200 and L300.  L200 and L300 are being offered on January 24th. Please note that Leadership 100 (On the Path to Leadership) must be completed prior to attending the Leadership 200 or 300 courses. L100 is available for free online at the CREA Training Hub.

    With great power comes great responsibility, and your decisions will shape the future of your board or association. And your decisions as a director, and the actions of your board or association, involve a host of legal issues that may result in liability. Your association can get sued as a result of your conduct. But even more frightening, so can you!
     
    Virtually every process, no matter how small and insignificant, carries with it responsibilities and, if done improperly, consequences. As soon as you sit down at the director table, you have all the same duties, responsibilities and liabilities as a director of Microsoft - without the pay.
     
    You need to protect your association and yourself by understanding some of the basic duties and obligations of directors such as: the powers of a board of directors, the importance of your fiduciary duties, the joys of competition compliance, and the need to pay attention to how you make decisions. Join the lawyers from CREA’s legal department as they take you on a thoroughly entertaining (yet depressingly thorough) tour of some of the main areas of legal concern for directors.

    There are many new offerings being made by innovative internet providers to Agents and Brokerages across Canada. We want to provide you with some insights as to how some of the Internet based changes in Real estate Marketing, Internet listings aggregators and Internet Leads providers are impacting the Real Estate brokerage and consumer landscape.
     
    Winning in the Age of Disruption will shed light on how some of these providers have impacted the U.S. markets and what it portends for Canadian Brokers, Agents and Boards/MLS systems as well. We will see examples about how Digital Listings Aggregators (Zillow, Trulia, etc…) are building consumer facing experiences on-line and how these will compete for public and Agent attention and the revenue associated. In our efforts to be of service to our customers and in as much as these companies are in the process of selling their services in our service areas we need to understand more about how they work and their impact.

    Carl Carter, Jr., is a REALTOR® and the Founder of the Beverly Carter Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving agent safety. His mom, Realtor® Beverly Carter, lost her life at the hands of two clients in 2014. Since his mother's passing, Carl has dedicated as much time as possible to spreading the message of safety. He has a Master and Bachelor of Business Administration degrees from the University of AR in Little Rock, AR, and is currently pursuing an Executive Masters in Public Service from the Clinton School of Public Service. Carl is a Certified Franklin Covey Facilitator, a DDI Certified Facilitator, and an Achieve Global Educator.

    THE ADVOCATE AGENT

    As Realtors, we're masters at self-promotion, but if we're honest sometimes this 'tooting our own horns' can bring a degree of discomfort to each of us. We still need to build our platforms, but using that influence to celebrate others has become a centrepiece of the David Smith Homes Group brand. David will share stories and insight into becoming an 'advocate agent', turning attention away from himself and toward local non-profits and businesses, creating win-win scenarios.     David Smith leads the David Smith Homes Group out of Royal LePage Wolstencroft in Langley, BC, serving the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. David's business is built on a 'people over property, always.' approach, and has attempted to integrate the concept of 'advocate agency' into all they do. This means instead of talking about himself all the time, he tries to find local businesses and non-profits to celebrate, utilizing video content and social media with this end in mind. Ironically, he gets asked to talk about this approach regularly, trust him, he's aware of the irony. Highlights of David's advocacy have included 'Realtor Monopoly', a fundraiser for a local refugee settlement charity, and helping grow community-focused local businesses like Trading Post Brewing and Black Tiger Coffee. David has received a number of awards, including an Inman Innovator Award and a Real Estate Video Influencer Award, along with others for production, service, and professionalism. David has been married to Amanda for over a decade, and loves time with three young children.

    GRAHAM SHERMAN

    Graham Sherman and his business partner, Jeff Orr, are two “high level geeks” who met in Afghanistan in 2007. At that time they were working on contracts for the Canadian and US government and military, installing encrypted, tactical communication networks.

     By day, they rolled around the war zone in armoured vehicles, geeking out in the world of satellite communications. By night, they aimed their obsessive, high level geekery at mastering coffee, competitive BBQ, controlling their respective homes back in Calgary with their iPhones….and finally, with mastering the craft of brewing artisan beer.

     Now, only four years after the very first batched brewed in Graham’s backyard, Tool Shed Brewing Company has a new 15,000 square foot home in Calgary with beers being sold in over 1000 locations across Western Canada, and has been nominated as Canadian Entrepreneur of the year. The team were also named as co-winners of the “40 Under 40” recognition from Avenue magazine.  

    Graham and Jeff’s meteoric rise in the beer industry is due to a level of authentic, infectious passion rarely witnessed in any industry combined with an incredibly unique approach to the social media world we live in.

     The moment you hear their story you understand that simply drinking a Tool Shed beer represents an appreciation of the grassroots struggle of quitting your job and going after your dreams AT ALL COSTS!
